[Book Review] The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood

Written By: Sam Wilson

Margaret Atwood’s sweeping historical drama was the winner of the Man Booker prize in 2001. Told retrospectively, and spanning the 20th Century, The Blind Assassin details the lives of two sisters and is set against a backdrop of important events in 20th Century and particularly 20th Century Canadian history. The broad historical brush Atwood applies is interspersed with newspaper reportage of the lives of the central characters and a parallel science fiction narrative which becomes increasingly entwined with the lives of the novel’s central characters. The book is a gradual and subtle revelation of tragedy and deceit and a thorough and engrossing work of fiction.
